Best Sci-Fi:The Time Machine by H.G. wells.
“1984″ is boring, and is hard to fully understand what is going on.
“Neuromancer” I have never read so I can’t help you there.
“The Martian chronicle” This book will confuse and astound you will it’s confusing story structure.
Go with the Time Machine because it is by far the easiest book to read, it’s short and if you get confused by the plot there is a movie based on the book. You can use the movie as a visual aid when reading the book, but be warned: Movies tend to cut alot of the plot that the book intentionally had.

    They’re all good.
1984 would be my favorite of the lot. Also, it gets referenced a lot so it would be good for your general culture.
Time Machine is good. A bit too dated in my opinion but still.
Neuromancer is brilliant in its own way. This created cyberpunk (and thus originated other “punk” subgenres). He basically came up with the matrix, the internet… a lot of words that are now common language, like “cyberspace”, come from this novel. Still, I found it a hard and unpleasant read.
Martian Chronicles, Ray Bradbury. Can’t go wrong with Ray Bradbury.
Either one you chose won’t be a mistake. I’d go with 1984 if I were you but the others are good too.

I like all of them. But just for a change of pace read William Gibson’s “Neuromancer.” The book is the “newest” of the bunch, although it was first published in 1984. Coincidence?
There are lots of references to networking, jacked in, and other computer terms. There is a description, sort of, of the internet.
Best of all, you can read it online at:http://project.cyberpunk.ru/idb/neuroman...

i only know of one of them, i saw the film of the time machine a few years back – the world ends as we know it in the sixties and remains covered by lava and stuff from the (nuclear) world war three for millions of years. then when he finally gets far enough into the future there are eloi and morlocks. morlocks eat eloi.

Depending what you have to write your report on, I would go with either 1984 or (one you haven’t listed) Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.
Both are short, quick reads, with a ton of themes/etc to write a report on.

If brevity is important (and they are all very good novels), choose either “The Time Machine” (144 pages) or “The Martian Chronicles” (181 pages)
    The other two are longer:
    1984 (252 pages)
    Neuromancer (288 pages)
